ABSTRACTS

ABSTRACTS is an exhibition by five members of the photographic collective AM projects: Antony Cairns, Tiane Doan na Champassak, Olivier Pin-Fat, Ester Vonplon and Daisuke Yokota.

The exhibition reveals five series of abstractions created through photography and photographic processes. Exploring the possibilities of the photographic medium, each artist produces abstract results in different ways: some are camera-less experiments with chemicals and photographic paper, while some rely on close-ups, details and fragments of images whether the body, the natural world or urban landscapes.

Inès de Bordas et Laure Flammarion présentent deux versions contrastées de la Californie
«Joshua Tree» de l’anglais Chris Shaw et «738» de l’argentin Nicolas Silberfaden.

Chris Shaw captured a dark and spectacular vision of the Californian desert during the summer of 2013 while on a residency in Joshua Tree National Park. He took pictures in the early morning using a strong flash and printed at night in a make-shift darkroom in his bathroom, using an enlarger specially shipped from New York. In this bold and striking series of photographs, the joshua trees and various desert cacti are transformed into haunting anthropomorphic figures and dancing icons. The prints themselves bear the marks of the ad-hoc printing process, with bleeding edges, fingerprints, off-kilter frames and Shaw’s signature hand-written titles.

Nicolas Silberfaden : « Using a large format camera I have been photographing for the past three years the city of Los Angeles. The title ‘738’ derives from the building number where I lived, the starting point to my daily photographic excursions. The images revolve around the tension between the idea of longing and belonging somewhere, somewhere far into the topography of longing. This work is about the fabric of what constitutes a place, where these fragmented spaces and objects await a chance to be inserted with meaning, in hopes that perhaps with this we might be able to call this place our own. »

GOMMETTES

A proposal of Inès de Bordas

Inès de Bordas runs the London-based publishing house Adad Books. She has previously worked at Tate as well as for some renown photography dealers. Out of passion (not to say addiction), she tracks down vintage prints in sales, markets, bookstores, and dedicated websites.

Throughout her researches online, she found erotic photographs that have been altered by their sellers. In order to avoid online censorship, they covered the nude private parts (or sometimes just the erotic aspect of a scene) using various elements including stickers of various shapes and colors, ribbon rolls or large pieces of paper among other things. Each of these added elements brings humor and absurdity to the scenes depicted and the images acquire a second life where the voyeur becomes player.

We will be presenting this amusing and joyful ‘bordel’ in one of the gallery’s private rooms (that only those in possession of the floorplan will be able to find). Once again, playfulness invites itself Rue Visconti.
